10 FOOD TO PREVENT PROSTATE CANCER AND ENLARGED PROSTATE

Prostate cancer and an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), are the two most common ailments among men over the age of 50. Both conditions can cause discomfort and affect a man’s quality of life as he ages, but fortunately, both can be prevented with proper nutrition and diet. By eating the right foods, you can protect your prostate from enlargement and cancer while enjoying all the benefits that come with maintaining good prostate health. Here are 10 foods to prevent prostate cancer and enlarged prostate.

The foods to eat

Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, flaxseed oil, or walnuts are rich in phytochemicals that help prevent prostate cancer. Soy products also contain isoflavones which can reduce symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate. These foods should be eaten fresh when possible; avoid eating processed soy as much as possible. Once a day, add in some dark greens such as spinach or kale and fruits like cherries or cranberries as they are high in antioxidants known to prevent prostate cancer. Blueberries are also rich in antioxidants that have shown promising results when preventing prostate cancer by slowing down tumor growth. Adding these fruits and vegetables into your diet will help you remain healthy while fighting off any disease-causing cells in your body that may become dangerous over time if not taken care of.

1) Cabbage

Cabbage has properties that help prevent prostate cancer. It’s also a good source of beta-carotene, vitamin C, fiber, calcium, potassium, and folic acid. Cabbage juice is one of those best things you can do for your health which is not just good for preventing prostate cancer but its good for curing diabetes too. It can also reduce cholesterol levels in your body. Make sure you eat at least one small cup of cabbage every day or drink a glass of cabbage juice every day to keep away from having enlarged prostate or any prostate problems.

2) Parsley

A study published in Urology showed that men who consumed at least 1/2 cup of parsley daily had a decreased risk of prostate cancer. This herb is loaded with Vitamin C, which can help improve your immune system’s ability to attack invading cells. It also contains anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce swelling in your prostate. Don’t throw out those stems! The leaves are best for you, but studies show that the stems can actually inhibit tumor growth by more than 50%. Try adding parsley to a smoothie or just sprinkling it on top of your meals. If you don’t like its taste (some folks don’t), you can always try these supplements instead!

3) Apples

Apples are high in fiber, which aids digestion. They are also rich in quercetin, a flavonoid that helps reduce inflammation. Quercetin has been shown to inhibit PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels in men with prostate cancer; healthy men have higher levels of PSA than those with prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate. Finally, apples help keep your bones strong; you need strong bones for your daily life and especially as you age when your risk of fractures increases. For all these reasons, apples should be a staple of every man’s diet as he ages!

4) Grapes

Researchers believe grapes are effective for preventing prostate cancer because they’re rich in natural antioxidants called flavonoids. These antioxidants seem to prevent cancer by slowing down cell division, which is what happens when cells become cancerous. Grapes also contain a high concentration of flavonoid known as resveratrol, which studies have shown can also stop metastasis—the spreading of cancer from one part of your body to another. Though there are a number of foods that may lower your risk for prostate cancer, few have been studied as extensively as grapes. So be sure you eat plenty more than just one grape per day!

5) Oranges

Oranges are high in Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent prostate cancer. The vitamin C in oranges may also help repair DNA damage caused by free radicals and other carcinogens in your body. For best results, eat three whole oranges a day for a week or two at a time. Be sure you're getting genuine oranges; many so-called orange drinks aren't made with real orange juice!

6) Beans

Eat several servings of beans a week. Research has shown that eating red, white, or pinto beans reduces your risk of prostate cancer by 30%. Tofu: Eat about four ounces of tofu per day, which will provide you with an impressive 50% drop in your risk for prostate cancer. Whole Grains: Any whole-grain product is better than processed products, but some are more effective against prostate cancer than others. Brown rice is your best choice followed by whole wheat bread and cereals. Fruits & Vegetables: All fruits and vegetables have some kind of effect on fighting off prostate cancer, so eat a wide variety every day.

7) Strawberries

Strawberries contain phytochemicals, antioxidants that help reduce inflammation in your body. This helps prevent prostate enlargement. In addition, they are loaded with nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and fiber which is an important part of any healthy diet. One serving (1 cup) contains Vitamin C or 3/4 of your daily value, Potassium or 15% DV, Fiber 2 gms or 2% DV & Manganese 12% DV. See chart for nutrition facts. It is best to eat organic strawberries because there have been reports of pesticides on conventional strawberries that may cause cancer cells to multiply at a faster rate than normal tissues.

8) Cherries

The most recent research tells us that anthocyanins (the red pigments in cherries) have anti-inflammatory properties, which protect against prostate cancer. While eating cherries is helpful, more effective use maybe with supplements. Anthocyanin supplements are sold as a powder or encapsulated extract of black cherry. These can be found at many health food stores, along with their dosage recommendations. Some people say eating dried cherries is an easy way to increase your daily intake of anthocyanins. Try adding a handful of dried cherries into your oatmeal or yogurt for a tasty addition to any meal! Once you see how healthy these are for you, you’ll start eating them all day long!

9) Garlic and Onions

Eating raw garlic or onions a few times a week is associated with lower rates of prostate cancer. Garlic contains phytochemicals (compounds that are not nutrients but that may protect against disease) like allicin, which can kill some types of cancer cells in lab studies. It’s also believed that sulfur-containing foods like garlic, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and onions help with inflammation associated with prostate problems like BPH. Aim for three servings of these foods per week or eat them liberally as they taste great on burgers and pizza. Reduce red meat: Men who eat red meat more than five times a week are twice as likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer as those who eat red meat once or less per week.

10) Carrots

The best food you can eat to prevent enlarged prostate is carrots. This can be applied to women too because they are just as susceptible as men. Carrots give you plenty of vitamin A which will greatly help your prostate. Make sure you eat raw carrots or carrot juice on a regular basis to keep your prostate healthy. Flax Seed: Flaxseed is great for preventing enlargement of your prostate as well as for keeping cancer at bay. Just 1 tablespoon of flaxseed every day, added into any food or taken with water, will add essential omega-3 fatty acids that help keep inflammation down in your body. This will also reduce the risk of diseases like enlarged prostate that are caused by inflammation in the body.
